Some 50 billion birds around the world migrate each year. Small and large birds, travelling up to tens of thousands of kilometres. By ringing them, we uncover their secrets so that we can better protect them. The well-being of the birds we ring is always paramount.
The people who fit rings to birds' legs are called 'ringers'. Only registered permit holders are allowed to ring birds. Some are researchers, but many are volunteers. Without their expert work, we could never collect as much information as we do.
Our projects are aimed at collecting knowledge about migration, numbers, survival and reproduction rate of birds. Anyone who holds a valid ringing permit can join. In addition, we carry out species-oriented research that focuses on tracking individual birds.
Our database holds millions of ringing recovery records of Dutch birds. Ringed birds are reported from all over the world: the greatest distance so far is nearly 10,000 kilometres for an arctic tern. Please feel free to view and use our records.
In our webshop, you will find measuring equipment, specialist literature and anything else you might need to do field work. Holders of a valid bird ringing permit may also buy rings and nets.
The Centre for Avian Migration and Demography is a partnership between NIOO-KNAW and the Dutch Ringers Association. The centre regulates the practicalities of capturing and ringing birds for purposes of scientific research, official policy and protection.
